Some Other Things I Like – An Update

Taking walks in the park with your hand in mine
The long evening talks when we’re feeling fine
Getting to the top on a challenging hike
These are just some of the things I like

I know it might seem work is always on my mind
And my writing in the evening when I’m way behind
They are a means to an end not a reason to fight
It’s only one small part of what I like

I liked golfing with you the other day
Calling you up and saying hey
Driving out to my mom’s and dad’s house
Thanksgiving turkey and Mickey Mouse
A day without sun just doesn’t seem right
These are some other things, that I like

Chasing your dreams just takes some time
But I don’t see forever as a 5 to 9
Sometimes I can take a break and break out the bike
Riding with you is one thing I like

It’s hard to be together and just be alone
We’re always interrupted by the telephone
As hard as we try when it doesn’t go right
Still being with you is one thing that I like

I liked holding your hand the other day
When your dad said grace and we all would pray
I know there’ll come a day when we’ll be alone
It’ll be quiet when the kids are all grown
I know we’ll need each other and it wouldn’t be right
If my music, was the only thing that I like

You Don’t Need Wings To Fly

You’ve got a big dream, it seems impossible
Just take a step at a time, and climb the mountain real slow
If your mind can imagine it can be done
Take the leap and touch the sun

You look up at the sky, you think it’s too high
But don’t you know, you don’t need wings to fly
Your dream can turn into your dance
All you need is faith and perseverance

Start your own business, be your own boss
Being on your own, doesn’t really have a cost
Stop selling your time and your dreams
You know you gotta take that leap

Gotta Do The Admin

My weeks are filled with billable hours
Even my evenings I’m on the computer workin
I try to do fun things sometimes
But when I’m free, I gotta do the admin

I left my job a couple weeks ago
Since then I’ve hardly seen my kids
Work all hours and when I’m not
I gotta do the admin

I never thought I’d be so busy unemployed
There’s so much to do for my client accounts
I hardly have time for myself
But it’s a good problem to have right now

So I sleep at night, work hard all day
Play hard at times for my mental health
But the quiet of an early Saturday morning
Is when I do the admin, I gotta do my admin

I never thought I’d be so busy unemployed
There’s so much to do for my client accounts
I hardly have time for myself
But it’s a good problem to have right now

My Greatest Problem

I work during the day 9 to 5
Watch TV in the evening, sometimes play some ball
My weekends are running my little girl around
How can I do more when I already give my all?

I see my friend over there from high school
He’s got a little business on the edge of town
He plays softball with us on Thursday nights
Otherwise he’s real busy and I never see him around

In fact I know he squeezes a lot into every day
He has a calendar and a secretary to help him get through the chase
And business is really booming I’ve got to say
You can see the change in him by the smile on his face

He works hard, he plays hard
He puts his fear upon a shelf
And I know I could do the same thing
But my greatest problem is myself

You see I know there’s some risks to his crazy life
And I know I’m going to have to sacrifice my comfortable little world
I may not be able to see my favorite shows on television
But what will I say someday to my little girl?

Do I tell her that hard work is rarely rewarded
And that her dreams will never become reality?
Or do I show her that you can do whatever your passion is
So maybe I can change myself and then she’ll see

Me work hard, and play hard
Put my fear upon a shelf
Show her she can do the same thing
No longer will my greatest problem be myself

The Rain

Blue skies all around me
You would think I’m happy but I only feel pain
Although my skin is burning from the sun in the sky
All I can think about is the rain

She left me with a sad look on her face
But the relief shined through she was playing a game
And my world crumbled all around me
Now all I think about is the rain

Nothing was more important to me
Though I worked hard to keep the life that we made
A difference of opinion just cut our life in two
Now all I think about is the rain

Today is the start of another beautiful day
But I have to lock myself in a dark room just the same
Though my business is meaningless to me now
Cause all I think about is the rain

What Do You Know?

My son went off to help in the hot dessert of Iraq
He packed up his bags and never looked back
I was so proud of him at the end of the show
I wish he’d never gone but what do you know?

My other son’s been going to college out west
Wants to be an actor, he’s trying his best
All it takes is a break to spin things out of control
He’s got a good head but what do you know?

My daughter is a Senior in high school next year
She got through it all, I really had no fear
Next year she’s going to Belmont, out on music row
She’s a country music writer, hey what do you know?

I’ve worked now for a distribution company going on three years
The layoffs started earlier, created a lot of fear
Now I’m a short timer with a week left to go
They’re closing down the place, well what do you know?

I started marketing my business a couple years back
Didn’t get much business but I made some good contacts
Now things are turning round, I’m reaping what I sowed
It’s going to support me, now what do you know?

So Cold – Poetry Saturday

Penni gets up on her birthday Monday
She’s in a good mood cause the weather’s sunny
Her boss gives her the news that her job has got to go
Man I hope that I could never be so cold

John has worked for the company 15 years now
First job out of college but the economy’s down
Now you’re letting him go could I be so bold?
Man I hope that I could never be so cold

Everybody’s been beaten so down
They’re just getting back on their feet
So we’re not making enough profit today
With a little luck who knows where we’d be?

Henry in the mailroom is 60 this year
Of course he’ll bounce back have no fear
Just give him a handshake and off he goes
Man I hope I could never be so cold

It’s my company now and we’re hurting so bad
Cut the payroll in half or no company to have
Then maybe I can get the damn thing sold
I guess it’s my turn to be so cold

Everybody’s been beaten so down
They’re just getting back on their feet
So we’re not making enough profit today
With a little luck who knows where we’d be?

Sometimes the bank just won’t give us more dough
Then it’s our turn to be so cold

I Blew It Big – Poetry Saturday

I just got my first check from all the work we finished
Was a lot but you won’t believe what I did
Bought the bar a double-round of Crown
Now there’s nothing left to show my wife and kids

I have to pay my crew but I don’t know how now
The bank loan is coming due can’t make the payment
Learn from my lesson don’t let it happen to you
Don’t be suffering under a mountain of debt

I blew it big… Ya I blew it all
Now I don’t even have a quarter to make a telephone call
When you’re in business you have obligations
And it’s a long way down to fall
Oh I blew it big, I blew it all

My wife forgave me again like she’s done before
Then I have a few drinks to muffle out the crying
I might be an alcoholic my friend but I can’t quit today
In the morning I won’t be feeling so fine

I blew it big… Ya I blew it all
Now I don’t even have a quarter to make a telephone call
When you’re in business you have obligations
And it’s a long way down to fall
Oh I blew it big, I blew it all

Depending On Nobody But You – Poetry Saturday

When you start believing
In a regular job, a permanent paycheck
The illusion will evaporate
You’ll be on the street, collecting unemployment

Because nobody cares
And nobody’s looking out for you
You’re just a means to an end
Only one place you can go to

You can do it, you can start your own business
You can end this 9 to 5 rat race with a simple decision
And it’s not always the most secure thing to do
But you’ll be depending on nobody but you

I’ve seen friends come and go
Your job is not forever, you really should know
That you could wake up tomorrow
And it could be the end, the closing of the show

And nobody cares
Nobody’s looking out for you
You’re just a means to an end
Only one place you can go to

You can do it, you can start your own business
You can end this 9 to 5 rat race with a simple decision
And it’s not always the most secure thing to do
But you’ll be depending on nobody but you

You can do it, start today

Pickin Up – Poetry Saturday

I’m so happy with my little guy
But when he plays do the toys fly
He’s finally getting to be old enough
I can point my finger to the pile of stuff

And he’s picking up, pickin up
The toys go into the box again
Till the next time and I point to them
And he’s pickin up

Last week Thursday garbage day I thought
So I put the junk out on the curb but not
The boxes had to be broken down and tied
And another week went by

Before they were pickin up, pickin up
I guess I got to understand the rules
Spend the time to do it right you fool
So they get picked up

Last year was a horrible year for business
I thought they would repossess my kids
But this week I got a wonderful surprise
Sold some work and right before my eyes

It’s pickin up, pickin up
I guess the economy gets better no fear
You have to wonder after the destruction last year
Now it’s pickin up
